Turmeric and cancer: what the evidence says

Small or mixed human studies suggest curcumin may help some chemotherapy regimens or ease treatment side effects, but controlled trials on tumors disagree and the strongest positive one used an intravenous form.

PubMed lists more than 10,900 papers on curcumin and cancer, almost all lab and animal work. We narrowed the search to the 438 records tagged as trials, reviews, case reports or population studies, and read 46 of the 337 human-study records (16 systematic reviews, 23 trials, 7 case reports), plus a 686-patient radiotherapy trial the search missed.

Tumor results disagree. Two breast cancer trials reported more tumor shrinkage when curcumin was added to chemotherapy (51% vs 33% with intravenous curcumin in 150 women; 38% vs 8% with oral curcumin and piperine in an unblinded trial of 120). Placebo-controlled trials in prostate cancer (50 and 97 men) and an inherited polyp condition (44 patients, 12 months) found no difference.

In a precancer of the mouth (oral leukoplakia), 3.6 g a day for 6 months shrank more lesions than placebo in 223 people (67.5% vs 55.3%), but the tissue under the microscope did not differ.

For treatment side effects, small trials point to fewer mouth sores during radiotherapy, but the largest trial, 686 women having breast radiotherapy, found no difference in skin reactions.

A 2024 critical review of 293 studies concluded that a benefit against cancer has not been convincingly shown, and that better absorption was demonstrated mainly in studies close to the companies selling the formulations. Anyone in cancer treatment should raise curcumin with their oncologist because of drug interactions (see safety notes).
